Exposure & Response Prevention for Body Dysmorphic Disorder

ERP for BDD

What is it?

A modified form of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold standard, evidence-based treatment for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). ERP is a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that has been shown to be the most potent part of treatment for BDD.

Who can benefit?

Clients of any age suffering from BDD, who are tired of how the disorder is limiting their lives.  Tired of avoiding mirrors, photographs, videos, selfies, bright lighting, dating, or public speaking and are ready to reclaim their lives.

What can I expect?

A BDD therapist trained in ERP will work closely with a client to provide psycho education around the BDD and the function of their anxiety. Treatment begins with a thorough assessment of which body parts are creating feelings of dissatisfaction, as well as an overview of thoughts related to appearance, avoidance behavior, and beauty rituals. Following assessment the BDD therapist works with the client to pinpoint exposure tasks to accomplish during treatment. BDD exposures entail purposefully entering situations that increase distress and are typically avoided or neutralized through the use of a compulsion. These sessions are typically weekly, and duration of treatment varies significantly based on individual need, and duration and severity of illness.
